Kaipatiki Kapa Haka Cultural Festival
The purpose of this event is to bring our community together in a vibrant celebration of culture, language, and youth. Kapa haka groups from early childhood centres through to colleges will take the stage alongside other multicultural performance groups, showcasing the rich diversity of our community. Hosted at the historic Hāto Petera sports grounds, this special day is also about honouring te ao Māori, uplifting our young performers, and creating a welcoming space where all cultures are valued and shared. It’s an opportunity for whānau, schools, and the wider community to connect, celebrate, and strengthen our sense of belonging in Northcote.
The event will feature a full day of kapa haka and multicultural performances by groups from Early Childhood Education centres, primary and intermediate schools, and colleges across the North Shore. Performances will take place on a main stage set up at the Hato Pētera sports grounds. The programme will include pōwhiri (formal welcome), kapa haka brackets, cultural dance, and music from a range of communities, and short speeches to acknowledge performers and community groups. There will be food stalls offering a variety of kai and multicultural cuisine, information stands from local organisations, and family-friendly activities to create a welcoming, festival-style atmosphere. The event is alcohol-free, whānau-focused, and open to the public, encouraging community participation and cultural connection.
